Default I'd like to engage in a formal debate. You choose topic. - July 22, 2010, 01:54

I'd like to engage in a formal Debate. I'm up for pretty much anything, really. Though, I must warn you, most of my religious training is in the Catholic Tradition. I used to be an atheist, too, so I'm pretty much up for any position.

Lessee here, what else...

I want to start off real easy like... So the format of the debate should be really simple. How about a traditional Abrutus Dei Match up?

It goes like this: My opponent makes a three argument post in support of his position. Then I make a 5 argument rebuttal. Then my opponent follows up with a 2 argument closing rebuttal.

Then a pair of moderators judges the debate and declares who presented their argument the most effectively. If we want, we can also have a poll, but two judges to judge the arguments are a must.

Anyone who wants to give it a go, just reply. I'm pretty much open to anything, but please, please, please don't make it something simply, like "Does God Exist", ok? We will have an avante garde topic, understand. We simply must.

Well the prime question that always has me confused is: why should we have faith, in anything whatsoever, not just concerning God.

What is the benefit of believing in something without evidence, why have faith?

Moderator comment by steenkh:
This is not the place to have a debate. Please enlist for a formal debate, or start an informal debate in one of the other subforums.

And the moderators will not judge in a debate.

Yes. Don't debate in this thread. We'll start a new thread in the actual formal debate forum.

Also, since the moderators won't judge, are non-moderators allowed to judge? (Sorry, I didn't realize moderators wouldn't judge by the way. )

Why would you need formal judges? I don't think the point of a debate is to have one of the debaters declared the official winner. The point for the debaters is to convince the readers of their opinions. The readers can judge for themselves.

I might be tempted to go engage in a formal debate, however. But why wouldn't we just stick to the standard form described in the formal debate rules?

With regards to subject, I we should find something we disagree on... But since I don't really know your views yet, you might have a suggestion for an "avantgarde" view of yours that an atheist would disagree with?
